Desertification is a consequence of land degradation in arid, semiarid and dry subhumid areas. This occurs as a result of drought, deforestation, climate change or overintensive agricultural practices. The result is extremely poor soil quality to the extent that it is no longer fertile enough to grow crops. Drylands prone to desertification are home to more than 2 billion people on earth, who rely on these fragile ecosystems for their livelihoods and survival.
